About The Artwork

Painted in 1981 this artwork is a sharp critique on members of Basquiat's own race. By depicting a Negro policeman, he is making a conscious effort to show how African-Americans are controlled by the white majority in America. Basquiat found it utterly ironic that any African-American would be a policeman, working to enforce rules that were meant to enslave themselves.

About Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat burst onto the New York art scene in the late 1970s and gained international fame before his untimely death at the age of 27. His works, often characterised by their focus on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty and integration versus segregation, remain highly influential and continue to fetch astronomical prices at auctions.
