Caravaggio Bacchus (1596) – Sensual Youth & Vanitas in Uffizi

About the Artwork

Painted around 1596 for Cardinal Del Monte, Bacchus shows a youthful, sensuous god offering wine, surrounded by ripe and rotting fruit. The languid gaze and imperfect produce suggest both desire and the fleeting nature of pleasure. Originally in Del Monte’s collection, it later entered the Medici holdings and now hangs in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. A subtle self-portrait is thought to be reflected in the wine jug, revealed during restoration, adding a personal touch to this study of indulgence and transience.

About The Artist

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter renowned for his revolutionary use of chiaroscuro, creating dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Rejecting idealised figures, he painted with raw realism, using models from everyday life, often infusing religious subjects with intense emotion and physicality. His works, both celebrated and controversial, influenced generations of artists across Europe. Caravaggio’s turbulent life—marked by brawls, exile, and a mysterious death—mirrored the intensity of his art, leaving a legacy that reshaped Western painting.
