Water Lilies, Reflections of Tall Grass by Claude Monet
About The Artwork
Claude Monet’s Water Lilies, Reflections of Tall Grass (1914) is part of Monet’s hugely important Water Lilies series (Les Nymphéas), a sequence of approximately 250 works created during the last three decades of his life. The series depicts the water garden he cultivated at his home in Giverny, Normandy. Monet transformed his property into a living studio of light and colour, installing a lily pond, a Japanese bridge, and lush plantings to explore effects of light and reflection in paint. This artwork is significant for a few reasons:
-
Focus on Light & Reflection: Monet was obsessed with how light affects colour at different times of day and in different weather. In this painting, tall grasses and overhanging foliage cast rippled reflections on the water’s surface, juxtaposed with the broad, soft forms of the water lilies themselves.
-
Less Concern With Detail, More With Sensation: By 1914 Monet had moved far from detailed botanical representation. Instead he used broken brushstrokes and layered colour to convey the sensation of looking into the scene — the watery surface, reflections and plant forms become almost abstract.
-
A Bridge to Modernism: This late work shows Monet experimenting more boldly with space and form than earlier works. Artists of the early 20th century — particularly Abstract Expressionists — later cited the water-lily paintings as important precursors to abstraction.
