"Composition VII" by Wassily Kandinsky

Experience the world of abstract expressionism with "Composition VII," an iconic creation by the masterful Wassily Kandinsky. Dating back to 1914, this artwork is a testament to Kandinsky's innovative spirit and his profound understanding of form and colour.

About The Artwork

The years 1910 to 1914 are considered the peak of Kandinsky’s career and this painting is cited as the pinnacle of his artistic achievement during the period. He made more studies for this composition than for any other, though he painted the final version in just three days. "Composition VII" is believed to allude to the apocalyptic themes of Deluge, Last Judgement, Resurrection and Paradise. A swirling hurricane of colours and shapes, it was considered by Kandinsky to be the most complex piece he ever painted and it is the most famous painting by the artist.

About Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) stands tall in the annals of art history as a pioneer of abstract art. Born in Russia, his contributions spanned various artistic movements and regions, but he is especially esteemed for his profound abstract works that seemed to visualise auditory experiences. Deeply rooted in spirituality and music, Kandinsky's pieces often resemble symphonic compositions. He was a pivotal member of the Blue Rider movement and also played a significant role in shaping the Bauhaus school in Germany.
