Ludwig van Beethoven Oil Painting Print by Joseph Karl Stieler
About the Artwork
This famous portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven was painted by Joseph Karl Stieler in 1820. It’s widely regarded as the most recognisable and authoritative likeness of the composer.
Commissioned by Beethoven’s patron, Franz Brentano, it depicts the composer in a forested setting, intensely focused as he writes in the Missa Solemnis manuscript — one of his greatest works. The red scarf, stormy hair, and stern expression capture Beethoven’s fiery genius and turbulent spirit, painted just seven years before his death.
Today, the original hangs in the Beethoven-Haus Museum in Bonn, Germany.
