About the Artist
Kusakabe Kimbei (1841–1934) was a prominent Japanese photographer renowned for his hand-coloured images depicting traditional Japanese life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Kōfu, Kai Province, he began his career as a photographic colourist and assistant to European photographers Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried. In 1881, Kimbei established his own studio in Yokohama's Benten-dōri quarter, later relocating to the Honmachi quarter in 1889.
